Budget Referendum
The budget referendum on 4/21/2026 resulted in the INFLATED budget failing! As a result, the Board of Finance met, where they agreed to cut a mere $750,000 out of the proposed (FAILED) $6.86M INCREASE over last year's budget. This $750,000 reduction represents only a .58% reduction of the original proposed budget which was defeated. The resulting new proposed budget of $128,663,203 is still a $6.1M increase over the existing budget. It went out to referendum on 5/19/2026 and this new proposed budget failed again!
The Board of Finance and Board of Education will now go back to the table, make additional cuts, and the new proposed budget will again go to referendum. Ideally, the RTC would like to limit the budget increase to the rate of inflation, meaning the new proposed budget still needs to be reduced by an additional $2.5M.
We will need your help to accomplish this. Stay tuned to this page for additional information, and for the next referendum date once it becomes available. We defeated the inflated budget twice, and we can do it again, if necessary, with your help!!

Charter Revision Commission
The Board of Selectmen established the Charter Revision Commission on February 2, 2026 and appointed Commissioners on March 2, 2026. The Board of Selectmen has charged the Commission to consider:
a. Whether to amend the authorities reserved to the Town Meeting and Annual Budget Meeting as set forth in Chapter 7 of the Town Charter; and
b. Whether to amend Chapter 3 of the Town Charter (Board of Selectmen) to provide that votes cast for an unsuccessful candidate for First Selectman shall not be counted as votes for such candidate as a Selectman member of the Board; and
c. Such other changes, improvements, or corrections in other current provisions of the Charter as the Charter Revision Commission finds to be warranted.

The RTC believes this commission was formed:
a. without proper representation from RTC members; and
b. in order to avoid any minority rule in future elections; and
c. to completely eliminate public participation from our town government decision making.

The RTC formally requests RTC members be added to the commission to ensure ALL citizens of Guilford continue to have a voice in the town political arena.

You can voice your concerns over this purely political attempt at a power grab by visiting the Charter Revision Commission website.
